THEYYAMS - The art where Man becomes God

Theyyam is one of the most spectacularly colourful and ritualistic art forms of the northern region of Kerala known as Malabar. It is a unique form of worshipping the Gods, Goddesses, legendary warriors and the heroes of our bygone era. It is a ritual-based dance performance where the performers (also known as kanaladi) don their traditional costumes and invoke the Gods and Goddesses by singing and chanting mantras. It is believed that the God or Goddess temporarily manifests in the body of the performer during the course of this ritual, thus elevating him to a divine state, after which he becomes God himself. This ritualistic dance form establishes the age-old Indian philosophy of oneness.
